Sticky Situation

Not to be a buzz kill, but the honeybees are in danger of extension. And that's a big deal since they pollinate one-third of the crops we eat. What can you do to help save the bees. Make Art!

Did you know:
That in the year 2035 the world's population of honeybees will cease to exist if they continue to decline at the present rate.

25% of the honeybee population vanished in 2007. Scientist are calling the problem Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). No one cause has been identified, though viruses, malnutrition and pesticides are all suspects.

1/12 tsp is how much honey the average worker bee makes in a lifetime. The decline means the sticky stuff's prices have risen 14% since 2005.

The Funky Junque Gallery at Zinnia

The New Funky Junque Gallery at Zinnia...

is the new news....
we are expanding into the space to the east of us (where the Christian Science Reading Room was).

We are very excited about this new addition. It will be a gallery of wonderful art, creative and arty gifts, inspirational books and motivating pieces.

I hope to open the doors to the new gallery on August 16th (it will be a soft opening on an important day). Shorty after we will be having our first art opening.
A Benefit show for the Honey Bee's. We will be soliciting work to be donated to the show and profits from the show will go to an organization that helps the honey bee.

So - Open call to all artist- yes we mean YOU!
Zinnia will be hosting its first gallery show in Sept of 2008, and would like to make a difference while sharing art.
The bee colonies of North America are inexplicable disappearing, and we have the opportunity to help raise funds for research. The phenomenon is called colony collapse disorder and it is occurring all over the world to varying degrees. scientist don't know why this is happening. Research is being done but funding is needed to help save our bees.
So what can you do??
Create a piece of Bee art to donate to this show and the proceeds from the sale will be donated to bee research.
Each piece of art must relate in some way to bees. Each artist may donate up to 3 pieces.
If you are interested in participating please contact Tyn at tyn33@hotmail.com so that she can put on "the list", and get this ball rolling.

The store is still a bit of a mess but please come by and see what we have going on - it is nice to take a break and chat with friends now and then.

IDEAS....

I just thought I would share some of the ways I have used vintage china doll heads in the past. Many of you know I make these Vintage Tin Dolls from old thing.  Once you have these heads in your possession there are many different thing to do with them. These are some of the dolls I have made, and an assemblage piece which is a class at Zinnia.

A Box Arrived From Germany Today.....

I bought these china doll heads off the internet, and they finally arrived. It was like Christmas morning unwrapping 225 of these treasures. They come from an old factory in Germany, and are from around 1900. I guess that when one broke, cracked or had some flaw, they would cast them off into the dirt....(where people now go and dig them up!) So many of the heads still had dirt inside of them. As a special treat, the man I bought them from, Thomas, sent a gift...a bag of Frozen Charlottes! In case you don't know what they are, they used to make them and put one in every bag of flour, to encourage women to sift the flour carefully before baking with it. You would always sift the flour so you didn't wind up with a mini china doll in your cake! They are beautiful and amazing. They are all missing arms and a few legs....but for me it only adds to their beauty! So old and interesting.

Both heads and Frozen Charlottes will be available for sale at Zinnia.

Yester-year's Crafts...

Just thought these were too juicy, not to share. Funny how times have changed. To think that mother's took the time to buy patterns, find the right fabric, and sit home and sew doll clothes. But you have to admit that the artwork on these pattern packages made you want to do all those things! Look at those sweet stuffed animals....they are so cool and retro. Let's take the time to sew and craft, maybe some of these picture from yester-year will inspire us.

Happy 4th of July everyone.
